How to buy a stove kit in the UK.

by David Pearse
(England)

I wish to find a company that will ship a barrel stove kit to England, as I wish to build one, and as far as I know, no stores stock them?
so help please ! The stove is for my workshop in winter, so ideas please, Thanks David

Hi David,

Following your enquiry I've just spent a fair bit of time looking for barrel stove kit suppliers here in the UK but haven't had a positive response from anyone yet. I've contacted the manufacturer to see if they know of any dealers willing to ship to the UK, but I suspect they may not have any at present.

There are ways to get around not having a US postal address, such as setting up an account with Borderlinx, or a similar organisation. You give their address when you order, and they arrange shipping on to you in the UK. It does come at a cost though.

You are looking for "Vogelzang" - they also make ordinary wood stoves and their main site has a selection of accessories to complement the basic barrel stove kit. For example they have magnetic thermometers to check the temperature of your flue, and a hot plate that can be mounted to the top of the barrel stove - ideal for keeping a brew on while you are working!

I'm going to keep looking and I'll add a comment here if I have any joy in the next few days. If you succeed yourself it would be great if you could do the same.

Regards

Mike

Second manufacturer
by: Mike

I've also found a second manufacturer, based in the US, who has a very similar product. Their website is

http://usstove.com/proddetail.php?prod=BSK1000

Again, their website only lists US deliveries, but I'm enquiring about an order to the UK. Fingers crossed!

I have found one one ebay but they wanted to charge £100 just for delivery ! + the cost of the kit so about £180 in all, lots of people in the North of the UK would want to buy the kits, if they knew about them! with the hard times to come.
So lets get the word out.
I plan to site mine outside with copper pipe around and sand and insulation as part of my central heating, to use wood in this way is very safe and very very green, it will be housed in its one little shed, and all the bits to make it work, and I will post plans and photos when built. So lets get the Kits at the right price!

Thanks Mike and all that can help David

Response from suppliers
by: Mike

Bit of a downer on this one. I've heard back from two suppliers over the past few days, both with the same basic message.

In short they are very reluctant to ship any stove product, but especially the barrel stove kits, overseas as they would need to comply with the regulation in the receiving country. They are unable, or unwilling, to take those steps as each additional country they ship to has expenses, regulations etc.. that make it uneconomical or impractical for them.

You can see their point I guess.

Now I'm not aware of any specific legislation in the UK that would make these illegal per se, but for sure your insurance company would want to know about it.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help!

making charcoal at home: folke's 2 barrels method
by: Anonymous

Hello Mike,
Firstly, sorry for the off-subject; I can't find your email or contact point.
Secondly, re. home-making charcoal, check this:
http://www.holon.se/folke/carbon/simplechar/simplechar.shtml .
It works very very well. Been using it for the last 10 years. Even my guy, who is useless at anything fire-related, can make it work. One thing: you MUST use an inner drum with no holes in it, else you lose all your charcoal.
Best regards.

Thanks for the tip there, and sorry that a contact form isn't up. Website construction has been on hold for a while, while I've been travelling.

I've seen and experimented with retort style charcoal makers before. While they do technically give higher percentage yeilds they produce a smaller absolute amount.

For someone who has small amounts of woody matter to process and plenty of time this may be a preferable option. Where I garden I'm dealing with far larger quantities, produced from 2.5 acres of garden, woodland and allotment. When I burn I'm usually trying to clear waste, and making biochar is a nice bonus.

But you are right that this may be a suitable approach for many people, and will fit in nicely with some other thoughts I have for designing a biochar producing cook stove, suitable for regular or even daily use.

More on that later!

Regards, Mike

Interesting to see how that works out
by: Mike

Hi, I'd love to hear how that works out. Water heating systems should be more popular than they are, I guess mostly because they are less flexible and versatile than gas based versions.

There are a few obvious pitfalls to look out for, namely that:

  • The system MUST have some form of pressure relief valve, to prevent catastrophic failure/explosion

  • Barrels are not known for being robust and durable under the conditions found in these kit stoves. The thin metal can burn out fairly quickly and your investment in effort may be short lived.

If you do pursue this you should also consider some way to insulate the outside skin of the drums.

Thinking this through it may be worthy of a page to itself. I'll post back here when I've made some more progress.

Regards,

Mike

Barrel Stove Hot Water System
by: Sean

I like the idea of winding tubing around the outside of both barrels to make a wood burning hot water heating system. Connect the tubing to an insulted tank vented to the atmosphere positioned above the top winding to prevent pressure build up. Thermal mass could be added by constructing a steel box to enclose both barrels and fill with dry sand.

Barrel kits in uk
by: David

Pleased to say that I have found a supply, of once used 45 gallon drums with band held tops, great to work on and seal after, only had acrylic paint in so easy too clean.
Live in the East Midlands just 8 miles from juction 28 M1 so could supply?.
When I build mine plan to weld a bafle plate inside before sealing, so that the heat has to travel to the front of the stove, so no need fo a drum on top. Thanks David

Barrel stove additions.
by: Bronco

I have spent many months in Alaska when I was guiding hunters and dealt with barrel stoves but never made mental notes about the many modifications I had seen. I remember racks to dry clothes and some sort of plate to have a large pot of hot water. Dont remember the details.

I would like to have folks present their own personal attachment and cooking modifications they have made to their barrel stoves.

I may not ever find this pages again so try me at oldplugger@charter.net

Wood burning.
by: Andy Martel

I've been reading with interest about using a barrel to burn wood, and then using the radiated heat to heat copper pipes which have been bound around the said barrel.
I have experimented with this method and must say the energy output required to heat the copper pipes is huge, the efficiency is also very low. So you'll end up 'feeding' the wood munching monster.
The key is, is to put the copper pipe inside the barrel. This way the flames will be licking the copper and you'll have direct heat contact - far more efficient.
Go for the biggest you can get, eg. an old 250 liter electric water heater. Their metal insides (you'll have to strip them first) are 5mm thick and the diameter is 50cm. The thing will last for years and will cook a cathedral.
I use mine to heat my French swimming pool, it outputs approx 40 KW which is an insane amount of heat. There is some grinding to do, but reading the caliber of people on here I don't think it'll be a problem.
Good luck.

Self promotion
by: Mike from woodstovewizard.com

Gary,

I've removed the url from your post. I've let the discussion ride this far but blatant self promotion of your own site and products is pushing the boundaries a bit.

If you would like to establish a more formal advertising/affiliate basis, by which I could directly promote your product or site to my mailing list or to site visitors please get in touch through my contact form (link at the top of this and every page).

All the best,

Mike
