I had one of these years ago. they do get hot but I put a small baking oven on top of the double barrel for extra heat extraction. running it on low with a damper made it super efficient. heat for a large house. installed with wonderboard to protect nearby walls and safety was never an issue. it was truly worth the work and the return on firewood vs. heat was absolutely phenomenal. The metal won't burn through for years, the top barrel caught the creosote and sometimes it would catch fire but it stayed in the top barrel and it was like having a double stove. Sounds scary even after 3 years we opened it up and it was surprisingly clean. we did have the chimney swept yearly. use a pipe that crosses back over the top. I wouldn't have any other!
